International travel is back again, and here at Porter, we couldn’t be more excited.

Although the “green list” isn’t as extensive as we would like, there are still some exciting destinations to start thinking about the dreamy holidays we deserve.

While Spain stays at the top of the list as the nation’s favourite foreign destination, Portugal has also been attracting many people each year. Around 3 million British people visited the country in 2019, and we are sure that this summer, many more will do so.

In this article we’ll tell you about five places you can’t miss on your trip around the country. From lively cities to secluded beaches, the country has so much to offer.

Lisbon

The capital of the country has much to see.

Portugal is a country full of history, and as you can probably imagine, its capital has a decadent aspect that characterises the country.

Full of old buildings contrasting with the modern atmosphere of a European capital, Lisbon is excellent to get a bit of the Portuguese culture. People who visited highlight places like Torre de Belem, the neighbourhood of Alfama or even an escape to the colourful Sintra Palace.

For a visit to Lisbon we’d recommend a centrally located hotel—a historic building with very modern decoration that will make you feel at home.

Porto

Porto is the other big city in Portugal. Located in the north of the country, it stands by itself as a great destination.

Porto has the benefits of being a big city without losing the charm associated with smaller towns. While the city might look easy to stroll around, we recommend you spend at least two full days enjoying the beautiful attractions. Places like the Sao Bento station or the Sao Francisco church will make you want to stay longer.

Porto, in Portugal

After walking the famously hilly streets that the city has in abundance (get ready your trainers), you’ll be craving somewhere cosy and relaxing. We’ve found this stylish apartment to put your feet up after a day exploring the city.

Madeira

Madeira has been a popular island destination for many years now.

Located in the Atlantic ocean, this island is a paradise, especially if you’re looking for nature holidays with one of the most amazing landscapes. Among many other activities you can do there, hiking is one of the highlights of the tourist attractions.

The island is well known for this activity and the Levada walks. Doing any of these hikes will take you to the island’s most beautiful places, such as waterfalls, canyons, and forests.

When you’re done trekking around the island, you can relax at this seaside resort to make the most of your holidays.

Algarve

Algarve is the most popular location for tourists looking for beaches and sun.

Although you might think this is just a typical seaside area, the location offers much more including many little villages nearby where you can enjoy a different kind of Portuguese culture.

Beautiful beach in Algarve

We’d recommend renting a car and going to places such as Ferragudo, Ponta da Piedade, or visiting the medieval village of Lagos.

We’ve found these apartments or suites where you can have the convenience of hotel service yet all the commodities of home.

Coimbra

Coimbra might be one of the lesser-known destinations in Portugal, but this centrally located city is one of the prettiest in the country.

The medieval city was once the country’s capital, and it has a lot of history in its walls. The city centre is full of buildings, and walking down its streets will feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Take the opportunity to visit historic buildings like the University, its cathedral or the Santa Cruz Monastery. If you’re in the mood for some activities around the area, don’t miss the chance to visit one of the river beaches you can find in the area.

If you fancy a different type of accommodation, we’d recommend a stay at this palace where you can experience the luxury of staying in such a historic building.

We hope you’re ready to enjoy your well deserved holiday in Portugal. If you’d recommend any other locations, we’d love to hear more about them.
